Arizona water emergency resources

Official utility, flood and storm links for eight Arizona cities. Use them to report a leak, look up a flood map, or read a freeze notice. Phone numbers are not printed here.

Chandler

Chandler Public Works and Utilities is the city’s water utility contact page. Floodplains in Chandler says several small areas, generally next to canal banks and railroad embankments, are in the 100-year floodplain, where water can pond in heavy rain. The Maricopa County Flood Control District regulates construction in those zones. For water inside a home, see the Chandler page.

Gilbert

Report a water leak, a pipe break, or a sewer blockage on the Gilbert public works contact page. The flood zone page says the town slopes from east to west, so heavy rain can stack up on the east side of railroad and canal embankments, and washes can fill quickly. With the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, Freestone and Crossroads Parks hold floodwater. Look up your property on the town flood zone map before a storm. For a freeze, the town’s December 4, 2013 notice says exterior water lines can freeze and rupture, and tells residents to wrap them. For water inside a home, see the Gilbert page.

Glendale

Report a water service issue with City of Glendale Water Services, including a leak, no water, or a sewer backup. Use the city’s floodplain management page to look up floodplain rules for a property. For water inside a home, see the Glendale page.

Mesa

Report a utility emergency to the City of Mesa Water Resources Department. The city repairs leaks at the meter and the main. Leaks on the customer’s side of the meter, including indoor plumbing, are the customer’s responsibility. Severe weather preparation covers monsoon storms and floods: clear nearby storm drains, move valuables up, sandbag outside doors, and stay out of washes after rain. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County’s Mesa Zone D flood study covers a previously unstudied area southeast of U.S. 60 where flood-map panels are not available yet. For water inside a home, see the Mesa page.

Phoenix

Contact Phoenix Water Services for the city utility. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County works to reduce the risk of flooding to people and property. For a freeze, Phoenix Water Services says pipes outside a home typically begin to freeze at 20 degrees Fahrenheit or colder, and that water in PVC, poly, or vinyl irrigation piping can freeze and break. For water inside a home, see the Phoenix page.

Scottsdale

Scottsdale Water’s maintenance page is the contact for a water-line break or a sewer backup, and it is the freeze guidance. Wrap exposed pipes, take hoses off outdoor faucets, and turn off drip irrigation and sprinklers. The shutoff for the property is next to the water meter. The Indian Bend Wash greenbelt is parks, golf courses, and open space that also carry floodwater in heavy rain. For water inside a home, see the Scottsdale page.

Tempe

The City of Tempe water page is where to report a water outage or a main break. Flood control for the river is on the Tempe Town Lake page. The lake sits in the Salt River channel and passes floodwater from the Salt River and Indian Bend Wash, the largest stormwater inflow. For water inside a home, see the Tempe page.

Tucson

Tucson Water’s contact page is the utility emergency and leak contact. Pima County Regional Flood Control District says normally dry washes can become raging rivers in minutes. The National Weather Service Tucson monsoon page sets the season at June 15 through September 30 and says Tucson averages 5.69 inches then. First and last freeze dates for southeast Arizona are on the freeze-date page. Flood history for the region is on the National Weather Service Tucson flood history page. For water inside a home, see the Tucson page.
